Mold is a microorganism and a type of fungus that grows in damp environments. In nature, it develops on wet materials and decaying organic matter. Outdoors, mold levels are highest during the summer and fall. Inside buildings, it can spread on moist surfaces, such as the paper covering of wet drywall. Factors like flooding, leaking pipes, high humidity, and poor ventilation contribute to mold growth in homes and buildings.
Molds are found everywhere, and we come into contact with them daily. These organisms can impact human health in different ways, depending on the mold type, the level and duration of exposure, and the individual’s health condition
Mold often appears as dark or discolored patches on walls, ceilings, or surfaces. These spots can be black, green, or white, and typically have a fuzzy or blotchy texture. If you notice uneven discoloration, especially in damp areas like basements, bathrooms, or near leaking pipes, it could be a sign of mold.
Mold produces a distinctive musty or earthy smell. If you detect a musty odor even when there are no visible mold stains, it is likely that hidden mold is present in the walls, carpets, or ventilation systems. This smell is usually stronger in areas with poor airflow and high humidity.
Mold exposure can trigger allergic reactions, such as sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, or breathing difficulties. If you experience these symptoms when in certain areas of your home, such as the basement, bathroom, or near leaking windows, it could be a sign of mold presence.
Molds release allergens (substances that trigger allergic reactions) and irritants. When mold or its spores are inhaled or touched, they can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. These reactions may include symptoms similar to hay fever, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes.
Allergic reactions to mold are quite common and can occur immediately or after a delay. Mold can also trigger asthma attacks in individuals who are allergic to it. Additionally, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both allergic and non-allergic people. Other symptoms unrelated to allergies or irritants are rarely reported from mold exposure. Research into the health effects of mold is ongoing.
